World War 2 Online

Released in early June of 2001, World War 2 Online was at that time a huge disapointment for all.  The game was incomplete and needed a huge 100 meg patch on the first day of its release.  Huge lag spikes and stutters in FPS meant quick undenaible doom for the game.

While players threatened lawsuits, producers CRS (cornered Rat Software)worked feverishly night and day while charging the players nothing for the first three months it was in business.  Still incomplete but out of money CRS finally asked for a fee that was agreed upon with the initial signup of the game.

The dreaded red sky death

Taken during one of the early days of World War 2 Online this was known as the red screen of death.  It would soon be followed by a total system crash making many leave the game.

For those who wanted instant action this was not the game.

In the beginning it was a bit easier to get the vehicle you wanted The Allied players and Axis players could spawn unlimited armor and aircraft from anywhere.

Tank battles between slow but heavily armored allied players and fast but lighter tanks of the Axis players took place by the hundreds.

Air battles became a who has the only machine that can update for victories.  Fights between 50 ME-109s and 50 Spitfire aircraft were common place.

Then CRS came upon a simple solution.  Spawn limits.  These spawn limits were made so each individual town had enough equipment to use but not an absurd amount.  Still a work in progress spawn limits have turned World War 2 Online into a managable and realistic game.

If the vehicle you want to play in isn't in a front line town you may need to go one town behind the front lines and spawn the vehicle in.  In peak hours you may even have to go 2 towns back.

As everyone who wanted a game like doom this was not your game.  There was no instant acion but with patients the action was and is fantastic.

As time went on

Over the course of 3 years World War 2 Online has gone from 13 towns that could be captured at any time to more than 200 cities that must be captured from front line battles.  No longer is slipping to rear towns to capture vital components an option.

Todays battle are coordinated and applied tactics.  Battles as in real life are won and lost with amazing speed.  Aircraft can be a deciding factor in a pitched battle.  Aircraft like the Junkers JU-87 Stuka dive bomber can make precision strikes against enemy armor.  Columns of soldiers and armor can be struck on roadways leading into towns under attack.

Destroyers on the high seas are firing torpedoes and 5 inch naval guns at each other to gain supremacy of the seas.  Destroyers are attacking coastal communities to soften up defences so soldiers can make attacks.  Patrol boats are watching the skies warning Destroyers of incoming enemy aircraft.

Armor like the PZ3h and the Matilda2 are facing off, covering troops, and attacking enemy installations are awesome sights to behold.

Rewards for promotions like binoculars and different weapons for infantry.  Different aircraft for airforces. and The Destroyer are among the promoted players gains.  Everyone starts as a private and through in-game play are promoted for such things as kills, successful missions, capturing vital areas in attack, and staying alive.

Joining squads brings more enjoyment to the game

In the beginning you'll find World War 2 Online seems pitted against you.  Then you notice a group of guys that seem to be coodrinated without using the text message buffer.  They coordinate attacks seemingly effortlessly.

These are usually players in squads.  They bring with them helpful tools thta make the game easier to play for them.

They use voice comms like Roger Wilco and Team Speak.  They use sructured tested tactics that win battles.

Some squads are small 15 to 20 man teams.  Some are gigantic squads of over 100 people who make the war look effortless.  Some units are broken down to time zone units within the squad.

You have squads that are strictly ground units, air units, or naval units.  Some squads are multifaceted ground, sea, and air squads.  Finding the squad that fits your time and initiative is part of the initial battle.

Once your in a squad that fits your personality and time you'll enjoy the game more than you thought you could.
